Many worlds have already been conquered and sentient races are on the run. While many epics choose to build the threat up, that's not a problem here. Space+battles+are+turn-based+conflicts What's interesting about Space Rangers 2 is that the main focus of the storyline is already well underway when the game begins. During the course of the game, players will run into dominators looking to capture a new system, help with and organize attacks into systems already controlled by Dominators, and collect bits from fallen Dominators to put towards research that will eventually help destroy the three 'Mother Brain' type leaders that control all of their movements. Much of the game revolves around the eventual eradication the Dominators.

This race of machines is gobbling up sectors of the galaxy a bite at a time.

The big constant is that the galaxy will always be under attack from the sinister Dominators. That means random solar system configurations, random events, random attacks, and random missions. When a game is started, a random galaxy is generated. Thankfully Cinemaware Marquee is officially bringing the game out in North America on March 20th this time around. Space Rangers 2 has already been released in Europe for quite a while so our compatriots across the pond are already happy with product in hand yet again. Part of the problem is probably that the original Space Rangers was never actually released in the US so there are very few people even familiar with the series.

I guess the point here is that anyone who actually has knowledge of the game will know how large and free it really is. It's a space adventure epic combining exploration, trade, turn based combat, interstellar travel, multiple alien races, arcade action elements, and real-time strategy. When I tell them I've having fun with the game they raise an unbelieving eyebrow, nod, and recite sage clichГ©s like 'I guess you can't judge a game by its B-movie title.' So what is Space Rangers 2? Consider it a mix between Star Control 2 and Freelancer. Even the name of the game screams cheap and has made several of my co-workers point and laugh at me. Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators is a great example. Big games don't always get big marketing budgets.
